Artistic practices and community innovation

Art productions, manual skills passed hand to hand, and Al Fresco Art Cinema, in dialogue with Chioggia’s fishing community.

Bogiaisso [bo-jah-EES-so]: in Ciosoto, the dialect of Chioggia, a whirlpool, the spot where the water boils up.

Since 2022, during the fermo pesca, the annual fishing moratorium when the boats stay in port, Bogiaisso has run Al Fresco Art Cinema: a time to look in the mirror and find yourself reflected in sensibilities, lands and waters near and far, through international video works chosen for how deeply they speak to life here.

Bogiaisso is also a year-long journey of collective imagination, where fishers, artists and curators meet in bars and trattorias to question art and use it to reimagine the present with a critical eye.

Since 2023, Bogiaisso has produced performances, sound installations and artworks with fishers, artisans and international artists in residence in Chioggia. We invite people who have never had much use for art to pick up its tools and voice unresolved tensions, hopes and collective desires. In their hands, alternate versions of the present and future take shape and point towards new directions.

Since 2026, Bogiaisso has been running hands-on sessions with Chioggia’s craftspeople, who pass on their skills at a teaching workshop for women and people with disabilities. Only by teaching people who have never had the chance to “think with their hands” can we give new life to the practical wisdom that has sustained Chioggia until now, and that many other communities will need in the years ahead.

None of this would happen without an advisory committee of more than 20 curators and art experts, who strengthen the ties between contemporary art and the lagoon year after year.

We welcome you
to the hands-on workshop
of Officina Delle Fie

NOVEMBER

  • 08 Lab Esca Glam

  • 21 Welding 0.0*

  • 28 Welding 0.1*

In June 2026, with the Monastero di Santa Caterina as our host, we launched the Officina delle Fie: a teaching workshop for mutual repair, art fabrication and passing on manual skills, through community sessions, open conversations and informal classes.

The first session had people making earrings from fishing lures, a chance to think about beauty as an interspecies experience. On that subject, sea bass, octopus and marlin have plenty to teach us humans.

The second set redino lace beside fishing-net making and turned up unexpected common ground between master lacemakers and fishers.

Starting in November 2026, we’ll offer more workshops with local makers, fishers and young artisans.

For insurance reasons, activities involving power tools (marked with *) are open to Bogiaisso members only. All others are open to everyone, pay what you can.

Hands-on Workshops 2026

ESCA GLAM WORKSHOP August 2026

Thanks to the more than 40 participants and to Rossetti Reti da Pesca of Chioggia.

Video team: Furio Ganz and Elisa Dini

NET WORKSHOP October 2026

Thanks to the more than 20 participants, the Associazione Merletto di Chioggia, master netmaker Marco Polenta and the crew of the fishing vessel Silvano Bococi.
An afternoon discovering where two traditions, close and distant at once, meet: the netted lace known as redino or filét, and the making and mending of fishing nets for bottom and midwater trawlers.

Seeing how fascinated the fishers were as they watched the filét masters work was priceless.
